Already in prehistoric times humans had learned to make rope which he used for hunting and trapping (perhaps by rubbing between the leg and the hand of sheaves of grass.) Fibre naturali, artificiali e sintetiche

Prima ancora di costruire le sue prime città, i suoi primi castelli, l’uomo si fece dei tessuti per coprirsi. E continuò a fabbricarli per migliaia di anni usando come materia prima fibre di origine vegetale o animale.
Nelle piante le fibre formano l’ossatura che sostiene le parti morbide e polpose delle foglie, delle radici e degli steli. Negli animali le fibre si trovano invece nella carne, nella pelle, nei muscoli e nel pelo. Tutte queste fibre sono estremamente sottili (la loro lunghezza è infatti circa duemila volte il loro spessore) e sono costituite da una lunga catena di molecole grosso modo parallele l’una all’altra. Le fibre vegetali, come il cotone e il lino, sono di cellulosa, che è un composto di carbonio, idrogeno e ossigeno; le fibre animali, come la lana e la seta, sono costituite da vari tipi di proteine, composti di carbonio, idrogeno, ossigeno, azoto e talvolta anche zolfo (nella lana).

Per soddisfare le esigenze degli attuali metodi di manifattura e dei macchinari moderni, le fibre devono essere forti, resistenti, flessibili, lucenti e di dimensioni pressoché uniformi. Dovrebbero essere lunghe almeno mm 12 (meglio ancora mm 35 o piú) e spesse appena qualche centimillimetro. Inoltre dovrebbero essere ruvide o grinzose, in modo da intrecciarsi saldamente quando vengono attorcigliate per formare un filato, cosí da aumentare la resistenza delle fibre ed evitare che scorrano l’una sull’altra se sottoposte a tensione.

Soltanto alcune delle fibre naturali sono provviste di tutti o della maggior parte di questi requisiti; tra queste sono il cotone, particolarmente forte e resistente, la lana, calda e ingualcibile, la seta, morbida e lucente, e il lino, crespo e lucido. Le fibre corticali, che eomprem dono iuta, canapa, sisal e ramia sono forti e resistenti, ma troppo rozze per farne vestiti: si usano soprattutto per corde, spaghi, sacchi e stuoie.

Dal momento che le possibilità delle fibre naturali sono limitate, l’industria tessile sfrutta in pieno le fibre artificiali che sono state prodotte negli ultimi 75 anni. Tra il 1890 e il 1920 i chimici hanno scoperto come ricavare numerose varietà di fibre dalla polpa del cotone e del legno. Quelle che hanno avuto pili successo sono state il rayon di viscosa e il rayon all’acetato di cellulosa, che tuttora si fabbricano su vasta scala. In un primo tempo le fibre di rayon furono chiamate seta artificiale per la loro serica morbidezza e per la loro grande lucentezza.

Come tutte le fibre naturali, il rayon assorbe acqua e s’inspessisce quando viene lavato, ma c’è una Bifforema: le fibre naturali rimangono forti quando si bagnano e si gonfiano, il cotone anzi diventa più forte; il rayon, invece, quando assorbe una quantità di acqua pari al suo peso, perde circa un terzo della sua resistenza. Questo indebolimento è solo temporaneo, perché una volta asciutto il rayon riacquista tutte le sue proprietà originarie. È evidente, tuttavia, che la qualità di una fibra è migliore se essa non perde la sua forza quando viene lavata.

La scoperta del nylon da parte di Carothers fu particolarmente importante perché il nylon, che è la prima delle cosiddette fibre sintetiche, è almeno due volte piú forte del cotone, assorbe una minima quantità di acqua e mantiene intatta la sua forma anche quando è bagnato. Il successo del nylon portò alla scoperta di altre fibre sintetiche con proprietà analoghe.

Nessuna fibra presenta tutti i vantaggi o tutti gli svantaggi di cui abbiamo parlato. Le fibre naturali e le prime fibre di rayon resistono al calore e a quei solventi organici che si usano a volte nella pulitura a secco. D’altra parte esse vengono attaccate dalle tarme e dai batteri. Le nuove fibre sintetiche, invece, non vengono attaccate da insetti e batteri, ma si rovinano se stirate con ferro molto caldo.

Poiché il rayon e le fibre naturali assorbono rapidamente acqua sono particolarmente indicate per capi di vestiario che piú facilmente vengono in contatto col sudore. Per la stessa ragione si possono tingere e apprettare con sostanze solubili nell’acqua. Invece i tessuti di fibre sintetiche respingono l’acqua e si devono pertanto tingere e apprettare mediante processi piú complessi e costosi. Anche per essere filate e tessute le fibre sintetiche richiedono particolari procedimenti.

Dalla fibra al filato

Se si tira un filo da un tessuto di cotone, esaminandolo attentamente si vedrà che è formato da un certo numero di fibre sottili (lunghe da pochi millimetri a circa 5 centimetri) attorcigliate insieme. Lo stesso avviene per un filo di lana, ma in questo caso le fibre sono piú lunghe (da 5 a 15 centimetri). In un filo di seta le fibre sono ancora piú lunghe (addirittura vari metri). In ogni caso la resistenza del filo dipende dal numero di giri impresso alle fibre.

Fino a duecento anni fa le fibre erano filate faticosamente a mano, per mezzo di fusi e conocchie. Nel 1764 James Hargreaves inventò una macchina per filare il cotone che faceva funzionare otto fusi alla volta. L’invenzione di Hargreaves fu chiamata giannelta (da Jenng sua moglie) e fu la prima di una serie di macchine che avrebbero rivoluzionato la tecnica della filatura. Nel 1769 fu la voltaa del filatoio di Sir Richard Arkwright e nel 1779 comparve il filatoio a lavoro intermittente di Samuel Crompton, che, a differenza dei precedenti, produceva filati sottilissimi.

Prima di essere filate, le fibre tessili devono subire un processo di pulitura. Il cotone grezzo deve essere estratto da balle di circa 250 chilogrammi fortemente compresse, e quindi passato in una serie di macchine che lo allentano, lo mescolano e lo battono, liberandolo msí dalle grosse impurità e dalle tracce di terra. Una volta pulito, il cotone viene compresso in forma di falde (fogli), ed è pronto per la cardahice. Questa macchina é formata da un cilindro orizzontale, ricoperto da un gran numero di denti di ferro, che ruota rapidamente. Questi denti passano (pettinano) le fibre del cotone dalla falda al cilindro, il quale si copre ben presto di un sottile strato di fibre disposte le une parallele alle altre. Il cilindro ruota proprio sotto una serie di cosiddetti “rappelli”, forniti anch’essi di denti di ferro. I cappelli pettinano via le fibre dal cilindro in modo tale che, uscendo dalla cardatrice, esse vengono ridotte in forma di un lento nastro spesso circa un dito.

Questi nastri di cotone sono ben differenti dalla materia grezza fortemente compressa in pesanti balle cosí come era arrivata alla fabbrica: la cardatura non solo districa le fibre e rimuove ogni residuo di impurità, ma elimina anche le fibre piú deboli che ridurrebbero la qualità del filato. Le fibre vengono ora impacchettate senza comprimerle, libere di scorrere l’una sull’altra. Questo spesso nastro, passato attraverso apposite macchine chiamate rtiratoi, viene poi stirato fino a diventare sempre piú sottile. Per assicurare al filato una uniforme unione di fibre per tutta la sua lunghezza, a volte si dispongono parallelamente vari nastri per stirarli insieme. Per ottenere un filato particolarmente regolare, prima della stiratura si fanno passare i nastri attraverso macchine pettinatrici che rendono le fibre ancora piú parallele. Una volta che sono stati stirati fino allo spessore desiderato, i nastri vengono ritorti in filato.

La lana grezza deve essere lavata per eliminare il grasso naturale e il sudore accumulato. La lana si fila all’incirca come il cotone, con alcune varianti causate dal fatto che le fibre della lana sono piú lunghe e piú ondulate. Durante l’operazione di cardatura i procedimenti sono diversi a seconda che si voglia ottenere un cardato di lana (e allora le fibre vengono cardate in modo da non mantenerle parallele, ma da lasciarle andare in tutte le direzioni) oppure un filato pettinato (in questo secondo caso le fibre si cardano e si pettinano in modo da disporle perfettamente parallele).

La seta non deve essere cardata. I bozzoli della seta vengono immersi in acqua calda per sciogliere la sostanza gommosa che tiene insieme le fibre; compiuta questa operazione, le fibre vengono dipanate dai bozzoli e attorcigliate per formare il filato.

Le fibre artificiali vengono ridotte in filati direttamente dai filamenti stirati a freddo che le costituiscono, ma se alle fibre artificiali si devono unire altre fibre naturali, che sono piú corte, è necessario tagliarle preventivamente, in modo da portarle all’incirca alla stessa lunghezza delle fibre naturali.

I filati si possono rafforzare mediante una ulteriore ritorcitura, che però li rende pili duri al tatto. Questa durezza è indicata per i pettinati usati per vestiti da uomo, ma non per i filati di lana che si usano nel lavoro a maglia, i quali ultimi si devono attorcere quel tanto che basta a dare loro la resistenza necessaria, che può del resto aumentare (senza che diminuisca la morbidezza) ritorcendo insieme due o tre filati sottili.

Le fibre artificiali diventano filati “elastici” attraverso il cosiddetto processo di falsa ritorcitura, che porta le fibre ad assumere la forma di molle a spirale, lunghe e sottili, che però, dopo essere state tirate, riprendono piú o meno la loro lunghezza originaria.

To meet the needs of current methods of manufacturing and modern machinery, the fibers must be strong, durable, flexible, shiny and nearly uniform in size. Expected to be at least 12 mm (preferably 35 mm or more) is often just a few centimillimetro. They should be rough or wrinkled, so tightly intertwined when they are twisted to form a yarn, thereby increasing the resistance to flow and prevent the fibers on each other when subject to tension.

No fiber has all the advantages or disadvantages of all we talked about. Natural fibers and rayon fibers first resist heat and those organic solvents that are sometimes used in dry cleaning. On the other hand, they are attacked by moths and bacteria. The new synthetic fibers, however, are not attacked by insects and bacteria, but we ruin ironed iron is hot.
